Creative, colorful and sometimes quirky accents take root in the garden.

Walk into a beautiful garden and you are likely to see it: the cherubic statue of a child reaching out for a bird; the whimsical gargoyle; the sculptural fountain; the perfectly placed Greek column.

Garden art and accents are as popular as pachysandra these days. The right piece can serve as either a focal point or accent, while adding color, texture and shape to a landscape - often year-round.

Donna Ioviero, who creates all-weather indoor-outdoor fountains and sculptures, said that the popularity of garden art echoes other lifestyle trends: Gardening is hot, and people are investing more money into landscaping. ...

The trend also ties into the garden-as-retreat trend of recent years.

Ioviero, whose outdoor studio at 10852 Main St., Clarence Hollow, is called Garden of Earthly Delights, said that a fountain, for example, can put people in vacation mode - especially if high gas prices keep them home this summer.

"If they have a fountain in the front or back of their home, they can switch it on and pretend they are at a resort," said Ioviero, who is known for her playful designs and lush enamel colors. Prices begin at $99 for a small tabletop fountain and vary with size and design, including custom work.

If a piece stays outdoors, garden art can add visual interest year-round - taking on a new personality with changes of season.

"The light in the garden changes the look of the piece," said Christine Gallo, spokeswoman for Paul Gallo Creative Metalworking.
